T.S. Eliot said he was like a living saint, and Auden said something very similar. But then Tolkien called him a witch doctor. One of the Inklings meeting Charles Rins said he should be burned at the stake. Williams was if not a witch doctor, at least a very high adept in occult secret societies. It doesn't seem like they knew that much about that side of him.
