The History of Manhattan Island
Manhattan has often been called the long skinny island because that's exactly what it is. The natural topography of the island meant that the population could only really grow in one direction, which was northward. There were always people living uptown in villages like Harlem and Bloomingdale. But generally speaking, the city of New York grew from the south up.
