Gabor Maté spent his career working with hard drug addicts in Vancouver's downtown East Side. He argues that every addiction is an attempt to find relief from distress and emotional pain. Some become addicts as a way to self-medicate depression, insecurities or anxiety disorders. Still others use drugs to ward off the pain of aimlessness and despair over the meaninglessness of their lives.
