Virago Publishing House - A Feminist Press
Carmen Khalil set up Virago Publishing House in 1972. The first book published was a specially commissioned work about the lives of women in rural eastern England by Mary Chamberlain. When it was founded, Virago proudly announced itself in every book as a feminist publishing house. But people got very cross and told me how disgraceful it was.
