Why Is There So Much Meth in Southeast Asia?

The idea behind these places is that abstinence is the best cure for adiction, and that physical labor might kind of steal the body against temptation. Human rights organizations have documented instances of physical and sexual abuse and even torture detained drug users. They don't appear before a judge, and they are not informed of the length of their course of treatment - which can last from anywhere to two weeks or up to three years. So unsurprisingly, relapse rates are very high.
