Introduction

The tragedy of Macbeth has hardly been off the stage since its very first performance in front of King James VI of Scotland and 1st of England in 1606. There's an established, thespian tradition in which the actors of this dark tragic masterpiece refuse to say the title. What would happen? Well, talk to these thespians and they will tell you tales of those who dared utter the title of this play and lived to regret it. We so frequently wish our actors to break a leg in their performance, but of course we don't wish them any actual harm, quite the reverse.
