In 1952, Elia Kazan was subpoenaed to appear before the House Un-American Activities Committee. The committee had been around since 1918 under a few different names but its record is spotty at best. It has fought the ACLU, promoted internment of Japanese Americans during World War II and vilified dozens of artists.
