The Emotional Labor of Women in the First Half of the 20th Century

Women were trained to perform emotional labor, and men were never expected to do that. The soldier's role in the 19 thirties and forties was to protect the women and children from the enemy. And so if this wounded soldier is then getting care from a woman, it kind of activated this sense of gender shame. If i refuse to return to the battlefield, then i am not performing my duty as a man. This is not a nursing that one can call the angelic, merciful pacifist. Only life giving nurse is a life giving nurse who simultaneously takes life by giving life. When we save one soldier of our own, we kill one soldier of the enemy.
