Is There a Risk in Foraging for Mushrooms?

Why do so many dogs and human children just put basically anything they find on the ground into their mouths? You know, like a chances are not good that this is food, but by god, i'm going to give it a go. It seems like there's more risk in putting random, potentially poisonous or inedible things into your mouth than there is reward in whatever forsaken food energy you'd be missing out on if you didn'tput it in your mouth. Maybe one thing is that the conditions of modern life somehow encourage behaviors that wouldn't occur very much in nature.
