basic instinct was not nominated for Oscars in major categories like Picture, Director, or even Actress. Even at the height of its popularity, there were questions as to whether basic instinct would become the standard bearer on an increasingly conservative landscape. In August 1992, Us Magazine's Sex Issue mentioned basic instinct in most of its articles. I think audiences are ready to actually see the details of sexual play or lovemaking if those details are relevant to the broader scope of the movie.
