Barbara johns was 15 and a half when she learned that the man who drove her school buss was also her teacher. Her uncle, vernon, was a preacher famous for his persistent calls for racial justice. They lived in a farm community in virginia where there hadn't even been a high school the black kids until 19 39. The white school board didn't think that black parents wanted to educate their kids. A year after it opened, it was already overcrowded, 220 kids. It turned out black parents did want their children to learn.
