A Case I Didn't Take

After his retirement from the LAPD, I managed to land a job as a private investigator. It was only supposed to be as a change of pace to wean myself off the high paced lifestyle. The company I ended up getting hired by had an office on the ground floor of a building right across from the county courthouse with a pair of automatic double doors that opened up right onto the street outside. This meant that we got a lot of people just walking in right from the sidewalk, sometimes apparently out of total spontaneity.
