Originally, people began to lose interest in reading after the advent of television. Some minority groups objected to certain books that they found offensive. And eventually it was felt that books and learning in general created inequality and unhappiness so all books were banned. Funerals were also banned as they were soon as unhappy and pagan. Now everyone is just burnt after they die. That rules.
