In 2000 Robert Putnam of Harvard published Bowling Alone, an account of how more Americans than ever were going to end in bowling. In 2011 Sherry Turkle of MIT published a book on the impact of smart phones and social networking software called Alone Together. That's why the two themes of Viakale Shabbat and the Mishkan today the synagogue remain powerfully contemporary. They help us restore the subtle ties that bind human beings to one another. And they reconnect us to community.
