Breaking the Game in Storytelling
In the Neo Futuros we, not often but occasionally we'll write a play where in the middle of it it says stop the clock. And one of the things about stopping the clock is that whatever happens when the clock stops that's given extra special attention. In theater all the time you can bring the house lights up. You're breaking the expectations of what people think should happen in that moment. A really simple way of setting up an expectation of breaking and breaking the game in a way that's effective is if you are a person talking into a microphone and then you take the microphone away and just shout at the audience without the microphone. There's kind of this shock. It feels emotionally
