Fermina Daza is in love with Florentino Arisa and they have this kind of sort of love affair. Her father Lorenzo finds out about it and he does not want her to marry him under any circumstances. She ends up eventually running a boat company partly because she's like the nephew of the guy who runs the boat company. The main motivating thing for Ermino is that he needs to climb this corporate ladder, so maybe later in life he'll remember his my adolescent love affair with Fermina Dza and we'll come back to it.
