The movie is hard to pin down. The spur for the movie was the story of Hillary, who's a character loosely based on my mum. I'm an only child I grew up alone with my mum and she suffered for mental illness. So it's not directly autobiographical because I felt that I didn't want it to be about me as a child. And then I found that I had her working in a sort of rundown cinema where she encounters a young black man - they begin a relationship. They're both outsiders of different sorts.
