Saul is empowered by the Spirit of God to deliver Israel from the Philistines. But he disobeys and goes down to Gilgal, which was a rallying point in Saul's campaigning against the Philistine. He loses the kingship for presuming on Samuel's praisely prerogatives there. This Gilgal eventually is denounced by the 8th century prophets as the site of a national security under royal patrons with a corrupt sacrificial cult.
