Jimmy Carter grew up in the Jim Crow South. His father was a white supremacist. His mother was a nurse who took care of black patients for free. The first person in his family to go to college and he went to the US Naval Academy. And after the Naval Academy, he joined Hyman Rickover's nuclear Navy.
