Is There a Difference in Smiling?

In Homer's Odyssey, the whole epic adventure starts with Odysseus weeping on a beach out of homesickness. That's the fundamental human state of his longing for home. I mean, when you put it that way, and once you talk about it, you start to see it everywhere in movies and music and books and art. Yet we're in this sort of denial about accepting the sadness with the joy.
