When classists use the words ancient Greece, they don't really mean that modern day country sitting on the dangly lower part of the Balkans. Hesiod and the earliest Greek philosophers Theles and Axemones and Anaximander were not from the Greek mainland but from Asia Minor. Ancient Greece's early Lyric poets, Archilicus, Sappho, Bacchilides, Anakrian, Stesicarus, and others, these writers hailed from all over the Eastern Mediterranean.
