I don't feel I'm preaching to the converted or exploring the idea with the converted. Dryden in 1688 said, the purpose of literature is to give instruction and delight. But delight must take first place because literature only instructs as it delight. It clearly hasn't been historically true that people have been converted. Otherwise, it wouldn't have had any effect on the kind of violence which it has. That just fosters all sorts of positive feelings, including disinclination to smash someone in the face.
