Maoism was very appealing to a lot of anti-colonial leaders in terms of its emphasis on the kind of rural population and peasantry as a revolutionary subject. Some of these anti-colonial figures that I speak about briefly in the piece ended up being very committed Maoists. But I think the legacy of that does carry on today because it has been a presence on the continent for much, much longer than a lot of popular narratives would gesture to it.
