Slavery was considered by law as property or slaves were property or chattel, and deprived of most of the rights ordinarily held by free persons. There was just base slavery, which is for p o ws and debtors, et cetera. And then race pase slavery, which came round around the fourteenth century onward, when it gained popularity. Most groups had prohibitions against enslaving their fellow believers or their fellow in group. Even with those laws in place, that didn't prevent people from mistreating slaves.
