The diocese of Steubenville is one of the smallest by Catholic population in the United States. It has fewer than 30,000 Catholics and it covers seven mostly rural counties in Eastern Ohio. Bishop Jeffrey Montforten called an all hands meeting for Monday afternoon to announce a forthcoming merger with its neighboring diocese of Columbus. The next step is a vote at the fall meeting of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops but we won't know what happens until then.
