The Confederacy's Secession
When the Confederacy formed and seceded, a lot of delegates from the mountains voted to remain within the union or only voted for secession after they were threatened. The whole of East Tennessee voted to remain in the union two to one. Pro union military companies formed in every county. A hundred thousand Confederate troops deserted over the course of the war; most facing execution if they got caught. There's a whole civil war within the civil war in North Carolina.
