Plutarch's trying to give us this impression of this Roman who's, is this hardened kind of politician and kind of military guy. He found there a preparation that beggared description but was amazed at the multitude of lights. This is luxury, but it's a different sort than the one he's seen. So shock and awe as in awe. The next night he asks her to come to dinner, but he's unsuccessful in kind of upping the ante on the extravagance.
