The Origins of Rhetoric
Korax and Tysius are said to have lived in Sicily in the 5th century BC. Korax devised his manual on the art of rhetoric so that ordinary men could make their cases in the courts. He structured judicial speeches into various parts - poem, narration, statement of arguments, refutation of opposing arguments, and summary. This structure would remain the basis for all later rhetorical theory. His pupil Tysius is said to have developed legal rhetoric further upon the foundations of his work.
