The Relationship Between Middle Earth and Our World

Tolkien's Middle Earth is our Earth in the mythic past, not quite prehistory. He didn't invent this word; he used it to conjure a linguistic milieu associated with older Germanic Anglo-Saxon texts. In theology and the theology of Middle Earth, he's working from these two constraints: nothing essential can be true of Middle Earth that is not true of our world.
