According to traditional narrative of the battle, russian soldiers began running over a series of small frozen lakes at the rear of the allied position. French artillerymen watched this movement and then opened fire, sending thousands of russia infantry to a miserable, freezing death in the waters below. This is sometimes presented as some kind of war crime; while it's certainly not pleasant to think about, i think that's a bit much. Modern researchers have combed every inch of this part of the battlefield and have never found any evidence of any kindof mass drowning event connected with the battle.
