The Importance of Public Knowledge in the Development of Economics

The old traditional university back to medieval times was a vocational institution. The German universities were run by the individual individual states. Most of the students going through this system were in fact, as it were training doing a vocational type of degree they were actually looking to gain some kind of qualification which would allow them to build a career. But the Americans didn't see this because they were doing graduate work,. They sort of invented this idea of the specialized university, not passing on established knowledge, but creating new knowledge and all that sort of thing. And so that's, that was really a productive misunderstanding.
