Plato seems to say tat that tis spindle pole comes straight up out of the ground into up to the heavens. So in that sense, it pierces right through the earth as well. And so it might not be the case that the sphere and the axis are really ao the planet earth,. The spherical earth and theaxis are contradictory. That may not been the case at all.
