The term comes from Neil Stevenson's book Snow Crash, which many of us had read back in the 90s. The freedom and unlimited capabilities to build a virtual world that does whatever you want has been a powerful draw for generations of developers. You know, I still think that this is the right way to go to build the metaverse: Build something amazing that people love so they spend all their time in it.

John Carmack is a legendary programmer, co-founder of id Software, and lead programmer of many revolutionary video games including Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Quake, and the Commander Keen series.
