The Possibility of Someone Turning on a Microphone Without Physical Access to the Device at Any Point in Time

I thought it was a thing, right? I mean, I don't know how much I'm confusing fiction. And also they could turn on your camera without the light coming on. Maybe it's like, you know, bedtime scary stories. My gut still says, from what I know about the stack upon which these things are built, I feel like the answer to this is still, no, it's not possible. But I'm aware that this is deep into the world of my own ignorance.
