The Controversy Surrounding Ledger's Self-Custody Backup Feature
Ledger claims that this backup will require user consent to be generated and won't be automatically performed by any firmware update so there isn't any data to leak. Ledger claimed that there is no inherent weakness in their security design, stating in a Twitter thread quote, there's no backdoor to a backup. Independent security researcher Pescall Cávercaccio explained that in introducing this feature, Ledger had broken the number one security rule for hardware wallets.
