It had an evaluation function for how to decide which positions are good and favor which side or the other built into it by grand masters. And nowadays, anyone can play with computers at chess that will beat essentially every person on the planet. So i think we know that, yes, you can compensate for a lack of imagination by sheer speed if the domain is circumscribed enough.
