What Are the Demands for Real Democracy?
In early 2013, my co-author Isabel Ortiz and I were talking about the wave of protests around the world that seemed to have been building starting around 2010. What we found is that there was a huge cluster of economic demands, everything from end inequality to very concrete demands such as higher wages and more social protection. But what was overarching were demands for real democracy. People wanted governments that would look after their interests, support their rights, and ensure that their needs are provided for.
