Love is an evolved emotion that evolved in part to solidify long-term pair bonds. It's this uncontrollable emotion that I feel toward you, it's a sign that I'm committed to you at least for a while. And I'm not going to abandon you when an 8.5 comes along. So if we're talking about romantic love, I think it's an evolved emotion leading hypothesis that it's a commitment device.

David Buss is an evolutionary psychologist at UT Austin. He is one of the founders of the field of evolutionary psychology.
