Women in China - The Role of Women

The picture about gender roles in China is a bit more complex than one would initially think. Confucianists said that women were to be under the authority of the fathers, husbands, or even adult sons. Women really could not rise in normal settings that were blessed by the law because of Confucian rules but they could do that outside of it. Even pirates in China were fairly common. They obviously challenged the Confucian ideal of womanhood and the idea of females as virtues in their passivity.
