Rimsky's Firebird Suite

Most people hear the firebird as part of one of three orchestral suites that Rimsky put together using sections of the complete ballet. Strywinski was not in good financial shape after World War I, and orchestras were finding it impossible to get parts for his 1911 suite rented from his Russian publisher at the time. He realized that if he just re-orchestrated the suite and changed the numbers around, he would be able to call it an entirely new piece and therefore be paid for each performance in Europe. That's exactly what happened in 1945, except Strywinsky used his new suite for US copyright law.
