Many of the domains in which we try to apply our reason aren't ones in which we were evolutionarily prepared. We're also not so good at dealing with more remote abstract realms that have only become available through modern science and history, he says. In those realms, people tend not to think what's a good story? What's inspiring? What is uplifting? What is edifying? He adds: "People will sign on to hero myths, to religious miracles, to conspiracy theories"
