Why Did It Take So Long to Identify the Cause of Milk Sickness?

So why did it take so long for the medical community to definitively establish the cause of milk sickness? Why was doctor anna's work not heated while in retrospect, there were some pretty practical reasons. There is also o bias against irregular physicians, let alone women and indigenous healers. No amount of practical experience could shake the hierarchy of the ivory towers.
