The United Kingdom in the 19th century is a good long-term model for a country that seems to be at this very low point. Over the course of decades, it would actually put something into practice that's very effective. The increased suffrage gave more power to people. They turned off what's known as the corn laws. And that's how they managed to get out of their predicament without major violence.
