For almost 200 years, outbreaks of persecution were initiated by local mobs. The convicted christians were either thrown to the dogs, crucified, or even burned alive as human torches. Pliny wrote a number of letters to the emperor trajan, seeking guidance on how to treat these strange and stubborn christians. But why would the polytheistic romans care about the christians at all?
