There are lots of these precursors just trying to tell a story visually because in a pre-literate age it really makes sense to try and draw people in through that. Another one would be the panorama where you'd have a big picture on a large screen and through changing the lighting you could change the effect. The film is the last bit because you can't sort of stop and set it all up and then go back to a live act. So there you go.
