Are You a Socialist?
There is at least an undercurrent of racism that matters, I think, to the adoption of this anti-government line of argument in the 50s and 60s. When Reagan runs for governor in California, one of his key items in his platform are opposing fair housing laws. And so they use property rights as a kind of smokescreen to defend what is effectively racial discrimination in housing. It takes governance to address the problems that people pursuing our own self-interest create. Time does not have to be a socialist to come to this conclusion only an observer.
