The Consulation of the Future
With chronological time lines, it becomes impossible to even remember what happened last week. And because of the structures within which we live, we cannot struggle to imagine radical breaks in the continuity of our cultural experience. So this is what we should call the consulation of the future. All we can imagine is the stuff that we have now. It's not actually a new thing innd of itself. It's areordering of old things. We get kind of pleasure experiencing these old aesthetic objects from one time over another. But the pastiche is not kind of meaningless. There's still something there that seems interesting about them.
