The History of Cryptocurrencies

Cryptocurrencies date back to the mid-1990s. They were dreamt up partly in response to a desire to be able to send money from one person to another that avoids relying on bank or national currency. For several years they languished largely in the realm of digital enthusiasts. But then in 2008 global events caused it to burst onto the international scene. Our first expert witness is Francis Coppola, an independent financial commentator and a general kind of crypto skeptic. He tells the story of the birth of the first successful cryptocurrency - called Bitcoin.
