The Terminator went back to kill John Connor before he was born. All you have to do is prevent the mother from meeting the man who she had sex with to create John Connor. The guy that he sent back to protect her ended up being John Connor's dad. So if the Terminator never went back to killing John Connor, John Connor would have never been born in the first place.
