There's no concept of gullibility which draws a bright line between people who could be victimized by things like you just described or many other complex cons or even simple frauds. There is an element of gullibility, but that's not the whole story. And it may take people much longer to realize what's going on than they would have sooner. Is there anything wrong with any of these people? Well, at least in that, at least the main characters in that series, right, there could be certainly cognitive issues and so on that do make some people more vulnerable to being deceived,. But not in cases like these. It does seem like they must have made a mistake somewhere along the line
